Stayed with my husband and young son. We loved it.
It was funny that ear plugs were provided, assuming that the hotel knows that the place can get noisy from people and music downstairs.

Cova Hotel in SFO
I am still there and it is a pain to send this review, because the internet cannot work more than 10s!
I'd prefer to pay than have such a poor service!
Otherwise, rooms are OK, not noisy, but the Tenderloin area is not a charming place in SFO (kids many beggars, taking crack in the street...).
Non smoking hotel.
The ACE Hotel in Portland is a must stay at location if you want to be in the Pearl District. Close to many restaurants and shopping, the ACE offers a nice place to lay your head. The beds are not entirely comfortable, but the boutique hotel is just that ... certainly not a Westin, but definitely ecclectic.

The Ace Hotel in Portland, OR
I would describe this hotel as having character. It is old and neat in a retro sort of way. The rooms are very small and have very limited accomodations. However, the location is one of the best in Portland, located one block off Burnside street in downtown.
I stayed at the Ace Hotel over Christmas. Because business was slow, I got a free upgrade to a better room without even asking. That was nice! The room itself was fairly spacious, clean and comfortable, but the comfort level suffers a bit from the building's past as the low-rent Clyde Hotel (before the Ace people bought and renovated it). The single-pane windows let in drafts, and that means the heater is constantly going on and off to compensate. Also, the tiled bathroom is unheated and can be pretty cold in a Portland winter, but it's probably really nice in the summer. I liked the comforter topped with a Pendleton blanket -- that was a nice Portland touch -- and the iPod compatible alarm-radio would've been great if the iPod hookup had actually worked. Fortunately, Portland has some great radio stations, and the Ace has tons of cable channels.
The only real reservation I have about the place concerns a lack of security. Quite often, I'd come into the lobby at night and there would be no one at the front desk, which means that anyone could walk in off the street and go upstairs into the hallways whether they were staying at the hotel or not. Portland is fairly safe, but no city is free from crime altogether, and the situation made me a bit uneasy.
More positives: The food available at all three eating places within the hotel is excellent. Stumptown Coffee isn't my favorite, but they've got excellent pastries, Kenny and Zuke's is an excellent deli, and Clyde Common has an awesome bar and quite good food. All in all, the Ace is a fine place to stay even though they could do a little better with the security situation, maybe finding some way to limit access to the upper floors and elevator without compromising the funky character of the hotel.
Close to Powell's and some of the best restaurants in town, friendly staff and even Leonard Cohen lyrics on the walls. We were there for Leonard's concert so this was the perfect hotel!

Cool Hipster Hotel
The Ace has done a great job of turning an old skid-row hotel into a hipster haven. It's been done up really cute with lots of thoughtful, creative and cool touches. But here's the rub... Be aware when booking that the rooms have no toilet or shower... So plan on trundling down the hallway for many of your needs. This is a great hotel for a vacation visit to the Rose City. It's just a couple short blocks from Powell's Books main location and also close to downtown eateries and nightspots, but I would not recommend it for the budget business traveler.
Quintessentially Portland, lucky find! Portland's hot hotel!
I accidentally found this hotel when trying to book a cheaper option than the conference sponsored hotel...everyone who found out where I was staying was jealous...perfect location, perfect ambiance, unique accommodations....I would stay there again in a heartbeat!

Ace Hotel
Great central location, close to good shops and restaurants.
The hotel is pretty cool. But, it sucks to put on your clothes at 3 am after a night of drinking only to find that one of the bathrooms is out of order, and the other one's door has a broken lock.
Also, don't try to sit down in the restaurant just to have a beer. They frown upon that there, and there are no open seats at the bar either.
Still... I'd recommend the hotel for the sheer simplicity and atmosphere. You might want to splurge and spend for a private bathroom.
There's a Stumptown Coffee connect to it. Need I say more?! But seriously, this is a great hotel in a great location of downtown. I will be staying here each time I return to Portland until I move there for good.

the best, but not that comfortable
Beds and pillows are the worst and the air conditioning didn't work, until we asked them to look at it which took us a day, but they fixed it in two minutes. They are very helpful at the desk. Love the hotel, but it isn't for everyone.

The ACE hotel, located down town Protland
The Hotel has a historic look about it. It was convenently located. We were within walking distance of the show that we attendinding. The room we had seemed to be on the small side. I really did not care for a shared bathroom, especially in middle of the night. The bathrooms seemed very clean, almost bigger then the room I stayed in. I felt it was over priced. It did have good heating & air conditioning. I thought the bed to be too firm.
This hip hotel is a wonderful place to stay, especially if you like "different". The rooms are comfortable, the staff is friendly & helpful, the hotel is in a great location. What makes The Ace Hotel stand out is that it is an historical building and therefore quite unique. The owners have done a great job with renovation. I like it that guests "hang out" in the lobby on the comfortable couches visiting with other guests, reading, on the computer, etc. The fact that I had to share a bathroom was no problem. I never once had to wait to use it. Both bathrooms on my floor were roomy, clean & comfortable. The hotel even provided robes for the guests. That's why I say if you want a hotel that's out of the box, stay at Ace!
Stayed here at the end of July. I ended up booking a a "shared single" room, meaning a shared bathroom/shower. I was hesistant at first about not having my own bathroom but turned out not to be a big deal at all. I never had to wait to use the bathroom or shower, even in the morning. They give you a nice robe to use during stay, so was perfect. You also have a sink and towels in your room, so getting ready in there is not a problem. The hotel is full of character and the clientele is young and trendy. The coffee bar in the lobby is really popular and seems to always be busy. My stay was comfortable and the location was really convenient to get around Portland using the streetcar or MAX to and from the airport. I was in town for a wedding and had friends staying all throughout downtown, but I using the streetcar was super easier to meet up with all of them! I would definitely recommend staying here if you want a truly urban and modern hotel experience!
full of character and charm.
great restaurant and Stumptown coffee next door.
most friendly and helpful staff.
one of my better hotel experiences ever.
This quirky, fun hotel was perfect for my 3 day get away. I stayed in a room with 2 double beds, as three friends were with me. We fit comfortably (the beds were surprisingly luxerious, especially the pillows).
The bathroom could be awkward if you were staying with people you didnt know well, since the door was very thin. Noises from the street were common (we were right over Stark) but this wasn't a problem for us since we were out very late each night. If you want a quieter room try asking for one near the back and higher up.
Located in the heart of SW Portland, The Ace Hotel is the perfect location to see the city. It is nestled between Clyde Commons, Pete & Zuke's, and Stumptown Coffee (which are well known for good reason!). It is minutes from Pioneer Courthouse Square, The Portland Art Museum, and the Max line as well.
The staff were all extremely curteous, and very friendly. The Ace has a great vibe, and lots of local creative types make it their study area. Be sure to check out the upstairs lobby-there is an IMac for your use, and an old library card cataluge full of fun secrets!
Overall I had an incredible experience, and would highly reccomend this place to anyone looking to get off the beaten path and enjoy a little hipster hospitality.
Portland is a funky town with lots of character. Ace fits right in, it's like an old home but of course, bigger. I did the share-a-bath deal and it was fine. This isn't the Hyatt, but it's great if you're laid back and looking for local color and experience. I will be back.
The Ace Hotel was in a great location and the staff was wonderful. The room and hotel were kept very clean for an older establishment. The downside was that we did not have a bathroom in our room so had to go down the hall in the middle of the night. Also, the room does not have any amenities and although our stated 3 twin beds, we were not expecting bunk beds so ask a lot of questions before booking.
This was absolutely the best hotel stay I have ever had, even though I stayed in the very cheapest room (the shared triple, with two bunk beds + one other single bed, and a bathroom down the hall). The Ace offers an amazing balance of simplicity, style, and character. The beds are firm and comfortable, and the hall bath is fantastic -- huge, spotless, nice robes/towels/bath products provided, and offers a nice dose of privacy when you're sharing your hotel room with others. I stayed for three nights and never had to wait to get into the closest hall bath (and there was another one right around the corner). Also, for a jet-lagged east-coaster the fact that the excellent coffee shop off the lobby opens at 6 a.m. (even on Sunday) was a godsend. I was all set up on the super-comfortable lobby couches with a cappuccino and a Sunday Times (provided free by the Ace -- oh, and free wireless too) by 6:15. I have never before actually enjoyed hanging around a hotel lobby. My only suggestions: providing an extra blanket or two in the room would be good, especially since in the shared triple the heat/cooling unit blows right on the person in the top bunk (so it's better to regulate the temperature with bedding). The pillows were also crazy over-stuffed, not so good for necks. Also, how about some lotion with the bath products? Finally, on both check-in and check-out the person working the front desk was pretty stand-offish (though I'd take that over fake fawning any day). Overall: well done, Ace!
