About this property
'My Favorite Place on Earth'
This is the Hawaii you dream about! This little bungalow on the beach is an ideal tropical vacation destination for a couple or a family with children. It is the perfect island get-away for Honeymooners. The house and lanai open to expansive views of the beach, ocean and sunsets year round. The lawn and gardens are lush with native Hawaiian trees and plants including a dozen coconut palms. Start your day sipping your morning coffee on your private lanai while watching for migrating whales (Dec - March) or pods of spinner dolphins that visit the nearby Marine Sanctuary. Spend the rest of the day relaxing in the hammock in the shade of coconut palms or swimming with turtles, snorkeling or scuba diving in one of the best diving spots in Hawaii, the Puako reef, just in front of the hale. (You can read about it in guidebooks) An entrance spot into the ocean is just a few yards down the beach south of Hale Malia. Children will enjoy hours of beach combing and exploring the tidepools. If you are tired of packing/ lugging your family to GO to the beach this is a good place for you - you ARE ON THE BEACH.
The "classic Hawaiian beach house" -style interior decor is tastefully designed by Fine Design Interiors of Waimea and featured in West Hawaii Today. Home features Mayumi Oda original art in the living room.
Beaches and Touring the sights of the Island: Puako is conveniently located for visiting the numerous sights of the Big Island from north to south. Numerous Beaches and resorts are within 5 - 20 minutes away from Hale Malia. Closest public beaches: '69' Beach in Waialea Bay (5 minutes) , Hapuna Beach (10 minutes) Driving times to some sights of interest: City of Refuge (south), 1 hr 45 min, Captain Cook/Kealakekukua Bay 1/1/2 hr, Kailua Kona 30 min, Kona airport, 25 min., Waimea 20 min., Hawi/ Waipio Valley 1 hour, Hilo/ Hawaiian TropicalBotanical Gardens 1 hr, Volcanoes Park, 1 1/2 hr.
Puako is also a great choice for vacations, because it boasts the highest number of sunny days (and the lowest annual rainfall) in the entire state of Hawaii. In fact, frequently it may be raining on the nearby beaches south of us and as you drive back to Puako it is all sunny and clear!!

The bungalow was a perfect home base for our stay on the Big Island. The house was immaculate, although we spent the majority of our time outside in the beautiful yard - lots of birds (including turkeys!) and turtles nearby. Lovely location and home!
Our second visit to Hale Malia was just as wonderful as the first. The charming bungalow, spectacular view and excellent location make for a lovely stay on the Big Island! It is always hard to leave. Mahalo Kirsi.
We fell in love with the cottage and with Puako. The house is cozy and great for a couple. The location is incredible. We hope to stay there again on our next visit to the Big Island.
If you are looking for a laid back, restful and quiet place to stay on the Big Island, this is it!
We’ve stayed here many times and it never disappoints. Puako is such a delightful area.
Clean, comfy and laid back.
Thank you and we hope to come back someday!
If you'll excuse my description of a rental property with a food description equal to Umami... It satisfies everything I'm wanting to find to relax and unplug and connect with what the big island has to offer. Love this place.
This little Hawaiian bungalow is what movies are made of. We thoroughly appreciated the gentle breezes, the sound of the waves and tropical birds, and exploring the lava tidepools into the evening. A peaceful respite from the rest of the word - just like in the movies!
Wow, this bungalow was amazing! It was perfect for my huaband and I, and just what we were looking for. It was incredibly clean and well equipped. Communication and service with the host was great too. I highly recommend this home.
We have stayed in many houses in Puako over the years. This will now be on our list of favorites...just right for two adults, a real Hawaiian feel, a beautiful location with sunset views. Though a modest sized house, it is on a large property which makes it feel private and quiet.
Hale Malia is a darling bungalow in a beautiful setting. A perfect place to watch whales and the ocean while sipping coffee!
The bungalow is very clean, well equipped and charmingly decorated.
The owner was very available, and proactive, when we had a small problem.
Dreamy!
This was the most ideal spot for a working vacation. I'll never forget it. Thank you for having an incredible retreat. The kitchen is incredible, love the showers, the bed was incredibly comfortable and the hammock was a dream. You nailed it!
We LOVED this place! Had so much fun watching whales and sea turtles right in the back yard! Comfy, clean, perfectly decorated, and so peaceful. Came here after the loss of my son and it was the perfect retreat from life that I so badly needed. Mahalo for letting us stay and we will be back!
This little cottage was great for a couple - wonderful back yard with great lounges and a perfect place to relax, enjoy the ocean, and watch whales. The only thing that would have made it better would have been a few kitchen supplies like oil or seasonings and maybe foil or wrap. Otherwise the kitchen is well stocked with cooking utensils. We would definitely stay again!
We had an incredible time at this beautiful oceanfront home.
Nothing better than enjoying the gentle trade winds while taking in all that this property has to offer.
Snorkeling right out front, Hapuna Beach 7 minutes away,
We were able to take advantage of the beach towels, beach umbrella, beach chairs, and the cooler that were there.
Close to restaurants in Kawaihae Harbor, Waimea, and Waikoloa.
But, we really enjoyed staying there for dinner cooking on the BBQ, and watching the beautiful sunsets.
Already looking forward to our next visit.
Had a lovely stay after a recent family tragedy, and Hale Malia was a wonderful bungalow to hunker down and heal. The location was amazing, the views unbeatable, and the snorkeling incredible. Waking up to that view will forever be our happy place, and we're already trying to figure out when we can get back in happier times.
BTW Kirsi was fantastic to deal with. When the winds and fires kicked up in the middle of our stay, she kept us up to date on what roads were open and closed, and when the emergency road out of Puako was opened. She was always concerned with our safety over the property, and was greatly appreciated!
This place was amazing!!! would recommend to anyone.
I read the only non 5 star review. it said snorkeling was 10 minute drive away. THAT"S NOT TRUE! Snorkeling is a 1 minute walk to the water. There's a walk-in area to the left of the property. Divers come in and out everyday. I dove everyday.
That non 5 star review should be removed. This place should have more than 5 stars
Excellent location, well kept property, great communication with owner, tidy house, good appliances, no "kitchen" products (coffee, baggies, spices, oils, etc) only salt and pepper so plan accordingly. There seemed to be an unusually large number of mosquitoes in and outside the house so bring repellent as there was none! My only suggestion (after years if not decades of staying at various places in Puako) is to also provide as others do (even a small one) a "welcome" Aloha gift basket. A small offering of local coffee and cookies, and whole fresh fruit and nuts, etc would have been very, very welcome. :)
What an incredible home!! We loved every minute of our trip and are thankful to the owners for sharing their beautiful spot on a gorgeous island. The property photos and details were accurate, even though I can't believe it was real - the ocean views and breeze and soothing sounds were calm and healing. The owner was practically immediate in responses to a few minor questions I had (and that's with a 6 hour time difference) and check-in was simple. The house was immaculate, extremely comfortable, and the furnishings were beautiful, both inside and out. Great to have a full kitchen for quite a few meals we had at the house. Pauko is a great home-base location for day trips we took to other parts of the island.
There were shore access entry spots all along the street and a few perfect sandy beaches about 5-10 minutes away. We ate at some fun and delicious restaurants in nearby Kawaihae and Waimea, and a few stops for sunset snacks at the resorts 10-15 minute drive away. But don't miss the malasadas food truck at the main road coming into the neighborhood! We also walked to the General Store for items we needed and sandwiches to take to the beach.
Chairs, umbrella, coolers, towels - all there at the house.
Perfect stay.
