The room was clean but a little old and a couple spots creaked. Staff was friendly and helpful. The gym/pool was not free even though i had a suite and the buffet had a good variety but it was hell to walk around. The open air bath was really far away and was given 1 water bottle because i was solo? Again, on a suite? There may seem to be a lot of issues but it was still better than most 4 star hotels.
Check in staff were exceptional! Although we speak some Nihongo, a technically Eigo-competent staffer clearly explained all aspects essential to our visit. Very helpful.
There's staff to welcome and orientate us upon arrival. And since it's a large hotel with 3 buildings, the staff briefed us and walked us to the building where our room was. Nice breakfast and we have 3 onsens to choose from! It's also conveniently located within walking distance or a short drive to the main sights at Gero.

Liked: Cleanliness, amenities
Property is huge. Onsen water probably one of the best in Japan. Facilities varied but dated. Not much dining in the area. Staff good value for money.
How do I put this? I wish I could stay there for more days. It was so relaxing and worry free staying there. Room was clean, staff were top notch, all the details were just perfect!
Wished they would have told us we needed a reservation to eat at any of the restaurants at the hotel. Check in was a little hectic but efficient. The room was very nice and comfortable.
It was our first staying at a Ryokan, we enjoyed our stay because our rooms are big and comfortable. The morning bath at the open air bath during sub zero temperature was my most unforgettable experience. Would definitely visit again when I go back to Japan.
We loved the Suimeken. We were warmly welcomed upon entering, and a friendly staff guided us around since it’s a fairly large compound. We were very happy with our room and the facilities all around. Great place to come unwind.
It was wonderful stay at Sumeikan and enjoyed three different public bath with my wife. The stffs are friendly and it was nice experience for twin beds and Japanese style hot table with tadami floor. However, my room was mountain view and we were nat able to enjoy brookview this time.
I love the Suimeikan! This is the 5th time I've stayed at the hotel. Their onsen is THE best and they have three great onsen options. Our room was clean and spacious. Love the traditional tatami room. Also, their breakfast buffet is really delicious, especially if you like Japanese breakfast - although their butter roll is amazing!
The hotel is big and could cater to big crowds without having the guests feeling overcrowding. The 3 onsens are spread over 3 different blocks of building but very walkable within indoor (hence no concern about rain or cold weather). Buffet breakfast was excellent with good spread of western and Japanese cuisine. Parking onsite is complimentary and the hotel is walkable to small town with eateries, shops and cafes. The option to have western and Japanese beddings in the room is good especially when travelling with elderly. The young ones can experience sleeping on tatami while the western bedding provides comfort for the elderly.
Great service start right at the entrance, staff are smart and make me feel very welcomed. Although they have a very long history, but all the space and facilities are very well maintained totally not feel aged at all. Food are good too, it is only pity that we could not try the Japanese dinner as we did not book it early (if you see this, remember to book your dinner early, we try to went out for dinner but quite most of the good restaurant do not open of weekdays so don't trust google too much). I am also regret that we didn't book two nights in a row (our pervious one is 40% cheaper, but totally not worth it). And if it is within your budget, try book our room, the room it super spacious and have very great view (it can totally host 4 will still plenty of space to toss your things around). Looking forward to my next visit to Suimeikan.
We booked the traditional suite room, it was so big and comfy, the only thing I really didn’t like is the hair dryer, it is the very old one that fixed on the wall with very low heat and air came out. We asked the hotel for any portable hairdryer but they didn’t have it. For woman like me with long hair, you better bring your own hairdryer, if not you probably need to dry your hair with at least 20mins just like me. I will come again if they change the hair dryer, if not I believe gero have lots of other options too
