The rooms were spotlessly clean, the atmosphere was welcoming and calm, and the location is super convenient for getting around the city. What truly made the experience exceptional, though, was the front desk staff—especially Nick. From the moment I arrived, Nick was professional, kind, and incredibly helpful. He went above and beyond to make sure I felt comfortable, answered every question with patience, and handled everything smoothly and efficiently. You can tell he genuinely cares about guests and takes pride in his work. It’s rare to find someone who combines warm hospitality, clear communication, and true professionalism the way Nick does. He really sets the standard and makes the hostel feel like a safe, friendly home rather than just a place to sleep. This youth hostel has a low rating but I've stayed more than 7 nights without any issues. Its centrally located and I always have a clean bed to sleep in. The manager is super nice and knows the area well. Always have some cash as he does charge a refundable cash deposit.

Great place not gonna lie and I’ve learned my lesson on reading reviews but the that runa this place even tho he did exactly what the reviews say he did let me stay and was somewhat of understanding. Like I said not a bad place to stay. It was kept clean and the surrounding area even tho it has its troubles not a terrible area just make sure you are not alone and/or don’t bother anyone.

Our stay was nice, We have stayed here a few times. When we stay here we get a one bed private room with shared bathroom. We love that there is a full kitchen for us to use, we enjoy being able to make our own meals. The room is a little on the small side and is literally just a bed in a room with no other furnishings, no table or tv.... Just a bed and a window that is located inside the building and across from another rooms window. The bathroom is nice and typically clean with plenty of hot water. The gentleman in the office is very nice. BE SURE TO READ THE INFORMATION THEY SEND YOU! CHECK OUT IS 10 AM SHARP! Also they require a $20 cash deposit for the rooms key card, don't loose the card, and you get your deposit back when you check out.

I had a pleasant stay at The European Hostel. The location is convenient—close to public transport and just a short walk from many popular attractions in San Francisco. The rooms were clean and the facilities were well-maintained. The common areas, including the kitchen and lounge, were great for relaxing or connecting with other travelers. Housekeeping staff did a good job keeping everything tidy and fresh. The staff is very friendly, especially Nick, who always goes above and beyond to fulfill any requests we have. The bathrooms and common areas are clean and well-maintained. Nick consistently ensures everything is in order and that house rules are followed. While some guests can be very rude to him, he always handles the situation in a calm and professional manner. His dedication and respectful approach make a big difference in the overall experience.

Decent Hostel

The hostel is doing a good job of renovating. The staff also take safety and security very seriously. Unfortunately, there is a lot of homeless people in the area. The building is older, but they have updated the bathrooms and added USB charging ports into the electric sockets.

For the price it is pretty good. The staff was very friendly and helpful - always there if you had any questions or needed assistance. However, it was noisier and dirtier than I had expected. The staff was cleaning frequently but I think the people staying there long term were just a bit messy.

The services by Nick were impressive & courtesy. He showed me the alternative bus to airport & walked to show where the little bus stop is. I checked out early, and he was there to help. Facility is old & not so clean. No towel, mattress was old & thin. No bed bugs though.

San Francisco is a beautiful city, but the area where this hostel is situated has a high number of homeless individuals in difficult situations. Not everyone will engage with you, but there are many unstable people around, which might not be ideal for a solo female traveler. The hostel's facilities are below average, but considering the price, it can serve as a reasonable emergency option just for a place to sleep. On the positive side, the staff is friendly.

I had a wonderful stay at the hostel! The place is always clean, and the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful—always ready to assist whenever you reach out. I also had the chance to meet new guests and truly enjoyed my time here. I'm definitely planning to come back soon and even extend my stay next time. A special shoutout to the manager, Nick! He’s one of the most dedicated and kind-hearted people I’ve met. He treats the hostel like his own home and goes above and beyond to ensure every guest is comfortable. He even steps in to clean and maintain the space himself, which is truly admirable. Nick is also very attentive to safety and house rules, making sure everyone respects the space and each other. Unfortunately, some guests don't always understand that a hostel has shared rules and responsibilities, but Nick handles those situations with professionalism and care. Overall, I deeply respect Nick's efforts and the way he manages the hostel. He truly makes it feel like a welcoming and safe place for all. Highly recommended!

Cheap, Affordable, and Not a Compromise

It was a good stay. I wouldn't recommend this for some who's used to a "silver spoon" lifestyle as this is the equivalent of crashing on a friend's couch for a couple of days; not so much personal space, there's always someone in the bathroom, and there is very little regard for your sleeping schedule. Expect what you pay for, but if the low price was the appeal to begin with, then understand that it's not a compromise to your safety. I found the staff to be very dedicated to their job and that gave me some peace of mind. Moreover, just sitting in the lobby with a menagerie of people felt like the start menu of a Persona game. It's a vibe. Finally, there are small lockers around if you'd prefer some added security and there are female only rooms if that was a concern of yours. The immediate area feels a bit shady - especially at night - but I'm also from Indiana and was just getting used to being in a big city. But again, it was a good stay.
