Very Good

Parking garage is close, restaurants close were also good. Room was clean, loved the giant bathtub. Stayed for Aftershock and the late check in was easy. Air conditioning was amazing, will stay here again.
This place was interesting. It’s nice, but certainly could use some updating. It’s a dual purpose hotel. Meaning there are weddings being held during your stay so there’s always people around. So if you need handicap access, you have to enter through the side, where the weddings are taking place. Kinda awkward.
We had problems with the keys and there wasn’t anyone around to help us. The actual contactless check in was easy and we were even upgraded to a suite. Nice staff, they communicated very well.
There’s really NO amenities at the hotel but water, ice and coffee. No food available, but it’s conventionally located near many eateries. Overall, I give this facility a solid “C.”
This was simply an overnight stay, but there were several issues that made it less convenient than expected.
The hardest part was finding the hotel entrance. Google Maps showed that I was right in front of the hotel, but all the signage seemed to indicate that the property was a wedding venue. I was very confused. I eventually rang the doorbell, but no one answered, so I called the hotel. Someone answered and said, “Just a moment.” After a couple more minutes, the door buzzed and I was allowed inside.
Once inside, the staff was very nice and accommodating. They allowed me to check in early, which I appreciated. I was told the room was not completely ready and that someone would return with fresh towels. About 30 minutes later, while I was getting out of the shower, a staff member came to finish making the bed and refresh the towels. I appreciated that they followed through, although there were already towels in the bathroom that I was using.
I also noticed a small leak under the bathroom sink that I could not stop. The Jacuzzi-style bathtub looked like it hadn’t been updated in decades, with visible cracks in the plastic, so I was uncomfortable turning on the Jacuzzi.
The next morning, there was no one at the front desk to assist me. Overall, the staff was friendly, but the difficult entrance, bathroom issues, and lack of front-desk assistance made the stay less comfortable than expected.

Disliked: Staff & service
I stayed at the Sterling Hotel for one night. I stayed in the deluxe queen room. My room was at best decent. The room was in need of a better cleaning, better decor, had some chips and dents, the TV didn't have anything to access to watch anything, staff isn't around after 4pm, and I think that they can do better! I couldn't get the jet on the Jacuzzi tub to turn on and I texted the number that was given and got no response. They didn't acknowledge my text at all during my stay. It would be helpful if staff was available for at least a few hours during the evening time to help customers. When I checked in they should have included instructions on the Jacuzzi tub. They say that they are operating like a bed and breakfast when there is NO breakfast. Coffee was available in the lobby and in the room. I think they could have spared a few more k-cups for the Keurig and I had to go down to the lobby to get more coffee. They could have included sugar too! I also think they should have included a lamented sheet or binder of restaurants and things to do nearby. It would have made my stay easier to navigate. I'm disappointed in the lack of service. I really believe that they can do better!!!
This place is terrible please don’t ruin your vacation by staying in that place.
Me and my husband got locked out of the hotel in the middle of the night and there is no staffing at all until another guest showed up and found a key in a lock box and open door for us.
Then inside the room was even more horrifying, the bedroom was so dirty, the bathroom had mold in it. The shower had a crack and rust.
We booked for two nights. But we ended up leaving the next day. We tried to speak to anyone from the staff in the lobby the day after. But of course no one was there so we took some pictures and we left and booked another place.
We tried contacting Expedia for a refund and they also could not reach out to the property so we could not get a refund. They offered us 150 key cash from their end but nothing from this terrible place.
Please do not make our mistake and book in this place if you do not want to ruin your trip.
How lucky to stay in an 1860’s private home from the “Weinstock Department Store” family on a tree lined street near the capitol, midtown, very safe and 100% walkable. This property is also a wedding venue. Check-in was easy and there was a gal manning the front desk when we arrived at 3pm. Our room 103 was on the reception level near the front desk, snack and eating room with, tables, ice, vending machine, keruig and microwave. There were also some comfortable chairs in reception to read and relax outside your room. There was a big front porch with seating. Also bricked in area with seating that is used by the wedding part of the business.
Our room was huge. A queen bed, sitting area by the big windows, a desk, tv and quiet air conditioning. The bathroom was also large but the old jacuzzi tub/shower had seen better days.
We had a quiet night and were able to have time in the morning to explore.
Note there is no parking included. There is lots of metered parking. Free street parking nearby is 10p-8a, midnight-8am. Secure monitored lots are $30 overnight. Also there is not a person at the front desk 24/7, but just a call away. There is no pool.
Do stay here if you are in town.
Great location to the convention center. Was here for a conference and it was just a short walk. I liked being off the main conference street and able to get to coffee and food nearby. Safe hotel with friendly staff. It is older and it shows, but it is clean and a unique place with the architecture and Victorian vibe. Would definitely stay here again!
There was minimal staff help, we only got keys from the staff and then no one was there. no breakfast was offered, coffee and water were available. Sterling hotel was not easily found, you have to search the wedding place which was their main purpose. I won't stay there next time.
The day before check in I received a message that after 4pm check in would be Airbnb style (no person, virtual). I got nervous and texted the number provided but after some back and forth an incredibly sweet woman was there in person to check me in at 8pm when I arrived. She was super kind.
Unfortunately the room was not very clean. There was hair all over the bathroom, and the room itself was just run down. The sheets seemed clean but the bed was sagging completely on one side. I kept my socks on while walking around the room and they got yellow on the soles.
I had a very difficult time sleeping because a water heater or pipes were clanging very loudly all night long.
I understand this is not a major chain hotel but a quiet and clean place to rest is not unreasonable especially at this price.
I come to Sacramento quite a bit for work and while there are plenty of hotels in the depths of downtown and along the Sacramento waterfront there are not a whole lot of options near the Capital and other state agency building. The Sterling is AWESOME for an affordable boutique stay in a very walkable and lovely part of town where accommodations are limited. I plan on making this my regular spot to stay when I'm in Sacramento.
Old building with interesting rooms. Bed was comfy, decor was cute but they could use classier trash bins and bags and the windows were dirty. Our tv didn’t work and the jacuzzi jets didn’t work which would have been nice to know in advance. No one onsite after 4:30. Overall okay for the price.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service, amenities
The electronic lock on our room door was a mess. Also, we were traveling with a baby and the access was very difficult. Otherwise, the place is cute and reasonably priced. Parking is a bit of a pain but there are a number of lots and garages within a couple of blocks.
such a beautiful suite! I loved everything. The staff was great and it was a fun boutique hotel. I recommend people to try it if they are in town for a night or two.
one of our key cards deactivated after using it a few times. we got another out of the lock box, which then deactivated after a few times again. we were guests for a wedding and were worried we'd be locked out all night. the first time staying at a hotel without any onsite staff to help after 4 pm. probably won't stay again for that reason.
Malia was amazing she made sure we were taken care of. My daughter was married there and Malia took extra time and made sure everything I needed for my daughter’s day was taken care of. I would absolutely stay here again!!!
Fun and beautiful hotel. I wish I had more time there. Beautiful hotel and attentive staff! Sadly out flight arrived late and our dinner plans in the immediate area was not meant to be. Room was beautiful, bed was amazingly comfortable, this would be a fun place for a wedding party. What I would do next time… get a morning flight!

Not really a hotel. The front desk closes at 4 pm. We are told this in a tiny little addendum at the bottom of the Expedia reservation, there is -no- indicator on the booking page when booking. They take your money and then you don’t have a room, and they say no refunds. How is this not a scam?
