The village of Dockray, consists of a few farm buildings and The Royal on a very quiet road, in some beautiful countryside near the lake. The staff were all very helpful and pleasant. The rooms were great and roomy. A great loction from which to access the Lakes and coast.
Unfortunately this hotel has gone downhill. We’ve been returning to this hotel for years and up until this year we have been massively let down. Whilst this hotel is within one of the best locations within the Lake District, the hotel itself has a lot to improve on.
As far as cleanliness goes I would struggle to find a clean piece of cutlery no matter how much I swapped my filthy ones.
When we arrived there was stains on the sheets that they appeared to try and hide away, and when asked for it to be cleaned or replaced we was told they had no others.
When our bedroom was serviced they had not replaced out mugs or spoons, nor had they refilled the tea and coffee. And when asking for more the management seemed rude, as if it was criminal we had asked for more, I think they require more training in attending to customers.
Maintenance is no better my partner and I had to cover the holes within the shower head with our hands in order to shower.
Most of the furniture is worn and dated and our TV remote was not working properly. Only a few buttons worked. When we spoke up about it they only replaced it within the remote from the room adjacent to us! That our partnering couple was staying in, leaving them with the broken remote.
They also only provide single quilts in the double rooms.
As far as the food goes it was quite pleasant, especially breakfast; one night we had the BBQ pork belly starter and the crackling was inedible, like plastic.
As the title suggests, if you're addicted to your mobile phone then this is not for you as there was no reception!
Not that this bothered me, although the poor television reception did!
I think the hotel could be described as quaint as most old buildings are, the floor in our bedroom was on a definite slant but then who actually wants to spend time in their room?
The food was as to be expected, plentiful, with the pie of the day a definite challenge to even us with a big appetite.
Hotel appears to be ideal for those wanting a base for a rambling holiday in the area with the local beers on sale and large selection of gins perfect for post-activity refreshment.
The only Hotel in Dockray provided a friendly environment. Room with ensuite was adequate and spacious. Breakfast cereals could be upgraded to include some decent muesli. The suggestion that guests pay £1 for an Internet code should be removed given the price of the rooms. On the whole a good place to stopover.
Friendly staff and management and the restaurant has some excellent food. Covid restrictions meant no housekeeping, which was a bit offputting.

night stay
2 night stay a week after lockdown eased. Hotel needs updating, but rooms were clean. Bed comfy and shower was good. Food seemed expensive but portions were large and tasty. Breakfast was good choice of full breakfast, scrambled egg etc.
Staff were friendly.
My only gripe was wifi should be free for guests.
Would stay again as it was great for walks which is what we wanted
Lovely overnight stop, room was comfortable, large en-suite and good shower. Food was delicious we ate in the evening and breakfast. The evening meals were homemade, delicious and very generous portions. We had a great evenNing. Right on the doorstep of Ullswater

Staff all great and friendly but room was very tired, comfy beds and nice shower but decor tired.
Had the tiniest room above the entrance
To the bar.
Room had everything for our comfort
Bathroom super( wonderful shower and
Shampoo products.
Because the room was so small it was
Too hot. Even though we turned off the rsdiators.
Perfect if it had been a very cold night.
Only critic!
Breakfast unbelievable.brilliant choice.
Will be back!
Loved it
If you want to stay away from the busy, dirty, and bad city life few days you should see this place.

Had a pleasant stay, and the location is great. The staff were very helpful, and the room was ok, if a little dated. The surfaces were in need of a proper wipe, as there was a couple of sticky bits on then. Shower room was quite compact. All in all, not bad.
The hotel was placed in a good location, it allowed dogs which was a bonus. The rooms were a little tired however, worn out carpets, lifted floor in the bathroom etc. It's an old building, but the floor boards were very noisy. The food was mixed quality.
The outdoor area was very nice, great for dogs, off the lead was fine (although they could get to the road quickly if allowed)
We used this as a half way point for driving to scotland and it was fine.

Not the best room dark and dated decor. Dim lighting as well - not enough light to read by. TV signal very poor we gave up trying to get a clear picture. On the night we stayed there were not enough staff. One girl trying to do everything. Lovely location. Interesting art work.

A nice little place to stay. We stayed for two nights, the staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was amazing, the location was great and we enjoyed our stay. The place was let down a little as it could do with some tlc, a lick of paint and some upgrades in the rooms. This would make it even better. We would still go back as the staff couldn't have been any more accommodating and it was a great place to stay. The food really was excellent, the chef did himself proud with a large party of guests. Definitely worth considering if you're looking for somewhere reasonably priced.
Stayed here for 3 nights between Christmas and new year. We were on a hill top viewing ullswater within 30 minutes of checking in. If your looking to visit the lakes and stay in a traditional lakeland pub then this is it. Locals pub with excellent beer and food. Traditional build so rooms were small but functional but very nicely turned out. If your looking for a cheap but comfortable stay you couldn't go far wrong here. Yes I would definitely stay again.
