The five wrecked Volkswagen Beetles, buried hood-down in the ground, were the idea of the Crutchfield family, who owned the Longhorn Trading Post and Rattlesnake Ranch next door. Slug Bug Ranch. It began when a huge corporate Travel Plaza was built on the opposite side of the Crutchfields interstate exit. They figured they could stay in business if they could siphon away traffic with something eye-catching and engaging. Slug Bug Ranch seemed a natural choice: a parody of the popular Cadillac Ranch, 35 miles west. At the time, the Beetle wrecks were painted a pristine bright yellow, and a sign next to them encouraged, "Sign a Bug." Slug Bug Ranch. The Crutchfield's were right about one thing: Slug Bug Ranch has proved popular as an attraction. Unfortunately, it flopped as a business plan, and the Trading Post closed only a year after it was built. Its advanced state of decay is a testament to the vigorous love it has endured from Route 66 travelers, who have felt free to modify the abandoned artwork with spray paint and whatever crowbars, hammers, blowtorches, etc. they apparently carry in their vehicles.

Nice place to stop.

Excellent motel. Only negatives were the lack of cafe or restaurants nearby - the only source of food was Subway at the Love’s across the I-40. No coffee service at the motel either.

We arrived at night (9:30 pm-ish), driving in past a closed motel and —in front of Executive Inn— a closed restaurant. There were little to no lights on in lobby, but fortunately a woman came to the desk and got us a key. We were pleased that the room was clean and pleasant, bathroom too. Newly painted it seemed. TV and bathroom worked, beds comfy. This motel is near highway, but with fan of a/c unit on, it did not keep me awake (whew). So if you need a place just to sleep for the night, moving on to eat breakfast elsewhere, this was a slightly creepy but good deal. I suspect it’s a family owned business— not a corporate cookie cutter.

A Hidden Gem

A great value! I’d stay again. This place looked nice and our room was renovated and clean and comparatively inexpensive. I was visiting Goodnight and Clarendon the next day and only 20-30 minutes away. We did settle for the nearest Subway for dinner and a Mexican cafe in Claude for breakfast. The Hotel.com address and our gps would have taken us past the motel but by chance we drove by it, so aim for I-40 & 207 near Conway.

EXTREMELY RUDE!!!! AWFULLY TREATED!

Horrible treatment.... drove 12 hours only to arrive and be told that no pet's were allowed!!!! 11:00 PM AND WE WERE TOLD TO GO ELSEWHERE!!! The website said that PETS WERE allowed!!! Lady was EXTREMELY RUDE!!!!

The room was clean, but if you need a shower, don't depend on that happening here, very low water pressure. If you are a smoker they tote smoking rooms but when you get there they don't. They are quiet cause not mang rooms are rented

Was the only person staying at the motel and was made to feel like an inconvenience even as I was just checking in. Room was somewhat clean but the bathroom was gross and the shower barely worked.

Good Lord no way should this property be listed on Expedia. Horrible place. Doors to rooms were broken, some hanging open, huge holes in the parking lot, total run down shack of a motel. Took one look and drove on! Expedia please remove this listing it is beyond beneath an acceptable place to stay.

Well worth the price

Well worth the price! Scored with this king room. Great mattress and fluffy towels. No extras like coffee or breakfast, but plenty of hot water and spacious rooms. And it’s right next to the quirky attraction The Slug Bug Ranch!
