Old red telephone box This old telephone box is located by the spot where the old Wisbech canal has been infilled. A bridge once used to take the Wisbech & Upwell tramway over the canal just behind the telephone kiosk (marked by the notice board beside it, at left). The Wisbech Canal (opened in 1797) - planned as a means to improve the status of Wisbech as a trading centre - linked the River Nene at Wisbech with Well Creek (the old course of the River Nene) at Outwell. It was constructed on embankments for most of its 8.4 km length because of the low level of the Fen landscape. When the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway opened in 1883, running parallel with the canal, the coal transported by the railway was initially loaded into boats for further transport but by 1922 all traffic had ceased and in 1926 the canal was abandoned. Derelict for many decades, the section nearer Wisbech was filled in during the early 1970s, allowing for the construction of the A1101/Churchill Road link without destroying the historic town centre. The rest of the canal was used as a landfill site. All that remains is a long strip of green, separating the A1101 and the A1122, which here run parallel with each other. Wisbech_Canal

"Upon arrival, the staff were very helpful. The room allocated was on the second floor. Very spacious and clean room. The bathroom was fantastic, very clean and bright. Both bathroom and the bedroom were well heated. We slept so well. The shower water pressure was not great. The hotel is very nice. The rooms need updating, and could do with some maintenance such as walls abd ceilings.I would definitely recommend this hotel and I would come back again. "
