About this property
Dunes Rest
Enjoy some time away at our secluded Dunes Rest cabin. Incredible views of Great Sand Dunes National Park and the Sangre de Cristo mountains welcome you to this cozy getaway that has everything you need to relax and explore the San Luis Valley. Located a mere 4 miles from the entrance to the National Park, this cabin is ready for those seeking adventure as well as downtime—sipping a favorite beverage and enjoying the expansive views right from the deck.
This cozy cabin is rustic in nature but loaded with lots of amenities to make your vacation experience comfortable and convenient. There are two bedrooms, each with queen beds, and the loft has two futon mattresses for sleeping as well. Please note that the stairs to the loft are very steep. The kitchen is stocked with all the basics to cook your meals on-site.
Dry air, little light pollution, and high elevation (approximately 8,000') make Dunes Rest an excellent dark sky viewing location. This community is certified by the International Dark Sky Association. The stargazing is truly stunning!
The cabin is located in a gated community that does not allow open fires of any kind due to the risk of a wildfire. We have a zero-tolerance policy on smoking of any kind inside or outside the property.
The cabin is primarily heated by a propane fireplace in the living room operated by the thermostat. There is electric baseboard heating in the bedrooms and bathrooms as well. There is no AC, so it will be warm in the summertime, but open the windows at night and enjoy the cool nighttime temps.
Due to its remote location, there is currently no Wi-Fi available at Dunes Rest. Most cell phone providers receive one or two bars of service, but not enough to stream digital content. We invite you to disconnect and enjoy time away from your devices during your stay.

Lovely, well maintained dune with amazing dune views! We enjoyed the peace and quiet. Kitchen is well stocked with cooking pots and pans and utensils. We cooked a full Thanksgiving meal and enjoyed the fire!
We stayed for three nights in late May. House was clean and comfy with an awesome view of the Dunes. If you want to be close to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and not camp, the Dunes Rest is a great option.
Dune’s Rest was a perfect place to enjoy Great Sand Dunes NP. It has a gorgeous view of the dunes tucked up against the mountains, and every amenity. Perfect place for families with kids! It couldn’t have been better!
There are lots of places to stay in the San Luis Valley but probably not many with this view! The view was amazing, the cabin was so cozy and quiet. Definitely recommend Dunes Rest! My husband and I were completely comfortable for our six-night stay.
Amazing views of the dunes from the large deck. The kitchen is well furnished. A great place to unplug. My kids enjoyed the small dvd library, but consider bringing your own favorites given the lack of wifi and cable/ota tv.my kids really enjoyed the stream out back!
This trip turned out to be a favorite for our Denver based family. The property itself had a lot to do with that! Very well appointed, had all of the things we needed to settle right in with out toddler, make meals, relax, enjoy the views. And great location right down the road from Great Sand Dunes National Park. Will happily recommend to friends and family!
Beautiful property. The scenery from the deck was outstanding. I love the flowering flora, and the proximity to the national park. The little telescope in the loft was an added plus. Kitchen had everything except a good ice tray.

We have stayed in several homes through Expedia/VRBO and this one was not only the most clean, but also the best equipped. The towels and kitchen equipment were first rate. I always bring my frying pan and a few cooking utensils when we rent a house, but I didn't need any of them here.
All four of us loved our stay at this beautifully appointed cabin home. The kitchen was perfectly outfitted with everything we needed to make great meals (there are no real restaurants close to this terrific home). The beds were super comfortable and the home was absolutely spotless (including the huge windows with incredible views). The expansive deck was perfect for taking in the breathtaking sight of the dunes at early morning, midday, dusk, .....and the night sky (SO DARK) offered up spectacular views of those amazing stars in the clear Colorado nights. The remote neighborhood felt very safe and so quiet! We can't really say enough about the ease of booking, communication, and the beauty of the home and surrounding area -- if you plan to visit the Great Sand Dunes, we believe this is the perfect home. You won't be disappointed. The place is exactly as described and you'll have a wonderful stay. We'll be back!
The park was just down the road! The home is lovely & perfect for a family. It is well stocked & very peaceful! We didn't stay long enough to take advantage of the games there or the grill, and it was a little too cold/windy to sit outside at the fire pit, but we did gaze at stars from the deck & they were beautiful! Note: there are 2 sets of instructions, one for "check in" with the keypad number for the actual door, and another set for "driving & parking instructions". Since I had a physical map & my phone, I thought I was set on the driving instructions & did not check these instructions out. However, the keypad number & location for the HOA electric fence is in those directions, so make sure to take a screen shot before you get there. The cell service is limited (as expected). Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
Location was perfect for our quick family adventure of the area. Beautiful view of the Dunes and the house had everything our family needed. Close to the park and Zapata Falls. Highly recommend and hope to be back soon.
Beautiful cabin! Great access to Great Sand Dunes National Park. Lots of great hiking nearby! Million dollar view off the back deck! Would definitely stay here again.
This was the perfect base for our time at the great sand dunes and zapata falls. We didn’t have much time so being right there was so helpful. And the property is adorable and well equipped. Highly recommend!
This property is meticulously maintained, clean, and recently updated. The amenities are thoughtful, the decor tasteful, and the views unparalleled. You can tell that the owners put a lot of love into this cabin. While here (Nov), we went sledding on the sand dunes and visited the reptile sanctuary. I would love to explore the sand dunes more thoroughly. If we have the opportunity to do so, I would absolutely stay here again!
This house is in the perfect location for maximizing your time at the Dunes & Zapata falls. We especially loved the beautiful view of the dunes from the porch. As Texans, we were very concerned about having no AC in July, but we were plenty cool, even cold, every night. There are a ton of great touches in and around the house to help us enjoy our time there. The comfy mattresses in the loft were perfect for the kids. We will be back again for sure!
once we realized there was no tv, we enjoyed the peace and beauty of the house. location was perfect. garbage dumpster was full to the brim. barely fit in our small bag.
