Absolutely amazing hotel with staff specifically for the bungalow we stayed it! They cooked us a beautiful dinner and breakfast when we stayed overnight. Dinner was truly the best meal I had in Sri Lanka. The bungalow and private pool were absolutely spectacular and I highly recommend staying here!
All the staff were incredible. The property was magic (we stayed in the giant tent). Handy to town via the on premises tuk tuk. Great food and just generally a damn good time!
This lovely boutique hotel exceeded our expectations. The staff is fantastic- so easy to talk to. And Chef Indika’s curry dinner was THE BEST WEVE EVER HAD. Don’t miss staying here and make sure you have enough time to enjoy being here. Two nights minimum!
Beautiful house, looking down on the hub bub of Kandy. Close enough to be part of it, but out of the way to enjoy the stunning scenery and garden.
Very relaxed and welcoming, talented chef, experienced and friendly front of house team.
We loved our stay at The Elephant Stables.
OMG! What a place
Our regret is that we had only one night here. This property is simply stunning, perched on the hillside with its views overlooking Kandy. Checkin was smooth and welcoming. We were in the Citronella Suite which was spacious, clean and extremely well appointed. The bar fridge had free snacks to enjoy and nonalcoholic drinks also free of charge. Charging points (USB) for your various devices was also supplied in the room. The bathroom was also excellent and fully stocked with all requirements. As we only had a short stay we elected to dine at the property. We had the Sri Lankan set menu which was a banquet in itself. It would have to be one of the best Sri Lankan meals we have had since arriving two weeks ago to the country. The staff are also exceptional, from the chef that comes out to ask about the meal and the service staff that will do anything for you with a smile. Nihal who is barman and head waiter is also a gem. Must be one of the happiest and friendliest people in Sri Lanka. We also liked the in room information that provides you with where to go and what to see. Even restaurants close by are reviewed in their handy guide book. Could not recommend staying here enough and will be on our must stay places should we return (hopefully July next year).
Wow!! What a beautiful place to stay where everything was top class - the staff were so friendly and helpful and the food was lovely. Our room (pepper) was one of the nicer rooms we stayed in overlooking the valley and pool. Can’t fault this property! Just to note, it’s in a high position over Kandy with limited options in the immediate vicinity.
Lovely setting, high up and on the edge of town, so that you feel worlds apart from the bustle of Kandy, but still close enough to experience major attractions. No restaurants to walk to, but food at hotel is really excellent and reasonably priced.
Quiet small hotel away from the crowds in Kandy. Everyone was very professional and helpful. Excellent food. Very nice views. Personal attention. Meals served inside or out in lovely garden.
The hotel was great, we initially rented the Sir David suite but chose to change to one of the cottages in the main hotel due to better facilities.
The staff were amazing! The kids had a blast playing with the resident turtles and running around the garden.
Food was one of the best we had during our trip.
The hotel was incredibly charming. It had a Victorian feeling, but the rooms and amenities were very modern. The hotel is on a hill overlooking the surrounding area.
Get the breakfast! The food was excellent, service was incredible and the dining room is beautiful.
The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive.
The bathroom in the Lemongrass room featured double sinks and a GIANT walk in shower.
I want to make a trip back to Kandy just to spend more time at Elephant Stables.
We stayed at the Sir David Lean Bungalow, which is about 15 minutes in a tuk tuk from the main Elephant Stables hotel. Although they offer a free shuttle to and from the hotel so you can use the pool facilities etc., we didn’t actually spend any time at the hotel so our review is just of the bungalow. We were greeted by Manjula and the very sweet chef (sorry, never got his name!) who spent the next 2 days making sure we were well fed and looked after. They were always around to help plan our days, arrange transport, suggest outings and then arm us with a mobile so we could call back at any time. They really made our time special and helped us get the most from Kandy. The bungalow itself is a stunning position, overlooking the river valley - it’s set a bit outside the main town but we enjoyed this. Beautiful (if not a bit dated) decor and a comfy bed - quiet evenings on the veranda were definitely a highlight of our trip.
We had the privilege of staying at the Riverside bungalow, placed about 10-15 minutes away from the main hotel. The calm and peace provided by this place cannot be surpassed. The ambience and attention of staff are second to none and the views 'to die for.' I could have sat on the veranda all day!
However, the bustle of Kandy is nearby and well worth the effort of taking a trip outside. A tuk-tuk driver was organised for us from the property for two outings (both of which were very successful and enjoyable, but it was a true delight to get back to our calm oasis away from the bustling town.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service, room comfort
nice hotel but far overpriced!
old pool, old showers,
no lobby,
expectations of colonial luxury hotel definitely not fulfilled. ok as a comfortable place to spend time.
good food. great view...
We stayed in the David Lean bungalow which sits a top a peak overlooking the river and the distant hills toward the North. Its quite location is just wonderful after the hussel of being in downtown Kandy. We had dinner in one night which good quality and the chief worked around our allergies without problems.
I would definitely recommend this place to others.
