Hopefully a good stay for the future
Lack of facilities due to Covid and a planned refurbishment. Hard pressed staff were doing best
I really don't like giving negative reviews but there are a few things a hotel room has to offer to make it acceptable. A quiet place to sleep is the top of those. I was prevented from
On site parking definitely a plus . Reception and breakfast area nice and modern . Clean and bright. My room was very dated , simple but functional. I literally just needed a room for the night. Bathroom lovely but sadly the carpet was really badly stained and made the rest of the room feel dirty even if it wasn’t.

Today the website still leads you to believe that the hotel has had the same owner since 1996 and that the hotel offers 'award winning fine dining'. Neither of these is true. There is no evening meal, lunch or all day grazing.
The breakfast menu still maintains the fiction that ownership has not changed and 2 of the choices offered for a supplement were not available for any of the 3 mornings we stayed. The coffee was lukewarm.
The room was clean, but I had to ask for milk and shower gel which were not replaced when the room was serviced.
The staff tried their best but there was little sign of management.
I have stayed in many hotels, good and bad. Most of the bad ones have been cheap. This was poor but not cheap.
Overall a good experience. Room was clean and spacious and the breakfast very good. Only negative thing was that we paid in advance by credit card and on arrival the receptionist was aware of this but on checking out we were asked by a different person for our credit card for the invoice. When we asked why we were told it was to pay for our stay. After explaining we we had already paid we were dealt with bluntly and no apology was given. This was misleading and feel if we had gone along with thinking it was for the invoice we would have paid twice.
New owners working hard esp with covid 19 but we had an enjoyable visit-good breakfast and clean room and bathroom

Walking
Great room for one night stay while walking in Derbyshire, think it’s strange that you can have a full English breakfast included but if you only want an omelette it’s £2 extra!
Boutique pub, in an old building but modernised to a great standard. Big room and decent bathroom - great shower. Nice bar and restaurant. Due to current health crisis no dinner chef of the right calibre at the hotel so they arranged taxis to a nearby sister property for an excellent dinner. I'm sure they will soon have a full staff at the George. Would recommend.
Nice hotel, staff very friendly but not enough of them. Breakfast was a bit hit and miss, they ran out of orange juice the first morning, we never even got our toast or milk on the second despite asking several times. It appeared there was only 2 staff to serve a full hotel. I appreciate we’re only just out of lockdown, but if you’re going to continue charging full rates you need to continue the normal level of service! Hopefully they will improve with practice.

A pleasant traditional style hotel, with friendly, helpful staff. The "superior" bedroom was comfortable enough, but the bathroom was cramped, with a very deep bath, making it hazardous for oldies with arthritis to climb in for a shower and equally hazardous to climb out. The real disappointment was the restaurant - very poor selection for dinner, so after one night, we cancelled and went out the next night. The staff and chef seemed overwhelmed trying to serve all those eating at 7:30. I'm sure the hotel will blame COVID, but there's no mention on the website of any restrictions to the menu and certainly what was on offer bore no relation to what was shown on the website.
Overall disappointing and overpriced at £150 per night.
Clean and tidy rooms, good water pressure from shower and plenty of hot water.
Would like to see usb charging sockets in bedrooms would be my only wish.

We were met by an indifferent and uninformative welcome , the rooms at the front are plagued by road noise so if a light sleeper choose one at the back., I could feel the springs through the mattress , we had a poor nights sleep .Our bath showers screen leaked over the floor
Breakfast was pleasant and filling
General service ok , although the Scottish gentleman was attentive
Everything was very good apart from the fact the position of the room was described as ground floor and in fact you had to go up and down stairs to get to it. I have a slight walking disability and found this difficult. We were also disappointed with the evening menu as this did not change, and not very varied, especially the desserts. We would have eaten with you more if this had. We therefore frequented other establishments whose menus were varied, despite Covid. Finally one particular evenings sleep was disturbed by a member of staff preparing the upstairs room. I would have thought this could have been done at a more unobtrusive time of day. We did enjoy our stay however and found the location excellent for exploring the area. Staff were friendly and helpful but need to slow down a bit with the breakfast as on two occasions the full English arrived whilst we we still eating our cereal! Overall though a good comfortable stay. Thank you.

The wholehote building looks lovely and I believe it is newly renovated. The breakfast was very good.
However, our room was much smaller than I had seen from the pictures when I booked it. For £145 a night, I find it’s overpriced.
What frustrates us the most is that there was no phone signal in our room, and we were unable to connect the WiFi in the room throughout our stay. This made our stay unpleasant because we couldn’t do much in the room at night. Despite that we had brought the matter to the reception, the problem wasn’t solved.
Great stay at the George, staff were helpful and coped with the various measures very well.
Room was lovely, comfortable and clean, and the breakfast was good.
Excellent basecamp hotel for exploration of the region. Parking and breakfast included make this excellent value. Town itself is very nice and has everything you need. Would recommend to family and friends. Found the room to be very warm but fan was provided.
The measures being taken to keep everyone safe in these difficult times with Covid 19 seemed thorough. The hotel generally was very clean. The staff were friendly and welcoming. This is a hotel rather than a pub with a few rooms let. The bar area is very comfortable, but there is no draught beer. The restaurant was very nice with a good ambience. Happy with the breakfasts and the evening meals we had there. We would have liked a fruit option at breakfast, but assume that was not available due to Covid precautions. The hotel is on a busy road and, surprisingly, the traffic seemed constant all night. Unfortunately neither of us slept particularly well as our room was at the front of the hotel. To be fair, with the windows closed it was a lot quieter, but then, to us (we normally sleep with windows open) it seemed stuffy. There was a fan in the room, though, which helped. Also, the duvet seemed to be a winter one, with a high tog rating, which was too hot for us. The only choice was to be far too hot or sleep without a covering at all. I am sure that all of this would not be a problem to many people, it just did not suit us very well. If we decide to stay again in future, which we may well, we will probably bring our own sheet and a blanket. The hotel has a good car park.
