  • The second oldest building remaining on The Ohio State University campus, Orton Hall was opened in 1893. It is named after Dr Edward Orton, Sr. who served as Ohio State's first president, OSU Professor of Geology from 1873 to 1899, and Ohio's State Geologist from 1882 until his death in 1899. Orton Hall is built of 40 different Ohio building stones. In the outside walls, these stones are laid in stratigraphic order according to their relative positions in Ohio's bedrock. The only non-indigenous to Ohio stone used is Indiana Limestone to build the front steps. It was chosen because of its high concentration of embedded fossils. The bell tower was dedicated in 1915 and contains 25,000 pounds of bells that can be heard regularly tolling across campus. Encircling the top of the tower are 24 columns with gargoyle-like figures which are restorations of fossil animals.

Beautiful hotel and rooms, great staff and service, building had been renovated but the driveway was a bit bumpy. Elevator was also sketchy, but stairs were easy to go up and down (only like 3 floors), so we didn't mind. Area around the hotel was plentiful with shops, entertainment and restaurants. Amazing stay, highly recommend!

The staff was very nice. Convenient location. I did not like that there was no coffee maker in the room and the coffee in the lobby tasted terrible but overall, this was a good value. I felt safe here and I would stay here again.

My room was very clean. The front desk staff are very nice. I didn't give 5 stars for everything because the fire alarm went off at 3:30 am and it was a false alarm. My room was exceptionally clean, however there was a teeny tiny roach in my bathtub. I don't believe it's because of the hotel. I learned during my time outside (because of the fire drill), that many of the guests are long-term residents and of course everyone does not have the same cleaning habits. Lastly, my bed was small (maybe a double size). It was fine for 1 person, but it could be uncomfortable for two adults if they are not on the thinner side.

The check in person when we called was very nice about late check in and our reservation, check in was good. Unfortunately we did find a couple cockroaches in the room. We had people with kids above us who were very loud, when we called the front desk they were going to ask them to quiet down, which they did not for about another hour. That ended up being 1am..there was nobody at check out to make aware of these situations either.. convenient if you have a pet.
